Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
