A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
