Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
