European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
